What a pool fence has to do

A pool fence has one job, and the gate is where it usually fails

A pool enclosure is not a regular backyard fence. It has to work on its own, every day, with nobody watching it. That comes down to four things holding together at the same time. A continuous barrier around the water. No gaps a small child can slip through. Nothing on the outside face that works as a foothold. And a gate that closes and latches by itself, every single time.

The gate is the part that fails most often. A manual latch only works when someone remembers to close it. A spring hinge that has stiffened over a winter stops pulling the gate all the way shut. A latch mounted low enough to reach through the fence is not really a latch at all.

The second most common problem is not the fence. It is what sits against it. An air conditioner, a deck box, a wheelbarrow, a play structure, a stack of patio stones. From the outside, each one is a step. We walk the perimeter and point those out during the visit, before they become your problem.

Why we do not quote a pool fence over the phone

Two identical pools can need two very different enclosures. A yard already fenced on three sides may only need one run and one gate. An open yard needs the full perimeter. A number given before seeing the yard would be wrong in one direction or the other, and it would not help you decide anything.

How much you actually need

The first factor. We measure the sections that are genuinely missing, not the whole yard, so you are not quoted for fence you already have.

The material

Chain link is the most economical option. PVC and aluminum cost more up front and ask almost nothing of you afterward. You see the real difference in dollars, written on the quote.

The gates and the ground

Every gate is an assembly with a frame, hinges and a latch, so each one added moves the price. Slope, rock, roots or a narrow side access all add digging time.

What it does not cover

Impact damage, exceptional storms, and changes made to the fence by someone else. You are told that up front and it is written plainly, not buried at the bottom of a page.

How is a pool fence different from a regular fence?

A regular backyard fence is about privacy and the property line. A pool enclosure is a barrier. It has to stay closed on its own, with no adult involved. That changes the gate hardware, the spacing, the height and what is allowed to sit against the outside face. A fence can look solid and still fail as an enclosure because of one gate latch.

Can I keep my fence and only replace the gate?

Often, yes. The gate is the part that fails first, because a manual latch does not latch itself. If the rest of the enclosure is sound, we replace the gate, the hinges and the latch, and that is the whole job. We check the rest of the perimeter before confirming that, because a new gate on a weak enclosure does not fix anything.

Are the rules the same in Ottawa and in Gatineau?

Which material works best around a pool?

All four we install can work. Chain link is the most economical and keeps the yard open. Ornamental aluminum gives you a clear view of the water and asks for almost no maintenance. PVC gives you privacy with no painting. Wood suits a yard where the fence should disappear into the landscaping. Around a pool we also look at where the gate lands, how the deck meets the fence line, and what sits close enough to be climbed.
