Fence installation in Gatineau
We install across every sector of Gatineau. Here is what applies at your address, and what it changes for your project.
Five sectors, one set of rules
Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers have been a single city since 2002. Whichever sector you live in, the same height, setback and permit rules apply.
The permit, backwards from what most people expect
No permit is required for an ordinary residential fence. The one exception is a fence enclosing a pool, which does require one. Most people believe the opposite.
Allowed heights
1.2 m in the front yard. 1.5 m in a side yard adjacent to a street. 2 m in a side yard not adjacent to a street and in the rear yard, for a building of 1 to 4 dwellings.
The setback that costs money when it is missed
The fence must sit at least 1 m from a sidewalk, or 1.5 m from a street curb where there is none, and entirely on your property. A fence set too close gets moved in full, not adjusted. That is why we measure before digging.
