L'Ange-Gardien fence by-laws
First things first: there are two L'Ange-Gardiens in Quebec, and two superseded by-laws from this one are still online with numbers that no longer apply. Here are the current ones, from the by-law in force.

The short answer
1.2 m in the front margin and the front yard. 2 m in all other margins and yards. Zoning by-law 2025-008, article 97, in force 23 May 2025.
A building permit is required for a fence, before work starts. The Municipality publishes a dedicated form.
Industrial exception: for a use in the "industrie" category the fence may be 2 m in every yard, including the front.
Beware the numbers still circulating
This is the main reason this page exists. Two superseded documents are still live on the municipal site and surface in search results.
- The former by-law 98-003, repealed. It gives 1.22 m (4 ft) at the front, 1.83 m (6 ft) at the sides and rear, and a 75 cm triangle. Those numbers no longer apply.
- An unadopted draft of by-law 2025-008, whose cover page still reads "ENTRÉ EN VIGUEUR LE XX". Its heights match the final by-law, but its article covers only yards and omits the margins.
And there are two L'Ange-Gardiens in Quebec. The other is in Côte-de-Beaupré near Quebec City, with a 418 area code and a completely different by-law. If you are searching online, check you are on the Outaouais one's site.
The heights, margins included

The word "margin" matters. The by-law covers the front margin and the front yard, not just the yard. The unadopted draft still circulating mentions only yards, which is not the same thing.
Where can it go? Article 96 allows fences and enclosure walls in every yard and expressly frees them from the setbacks. The by-law sets no minimum distance from the lot line.
The visibility triangle, and the tree exception
Required on every corner lot. Nothing above 60 cm: the by-law names plantings, fences, hedges and retaining walls.
Trees are an exception, provided there is at least 2.5 m of clearance beneath the tree.
Prohibited materials
- Barbed wire, except for use class P2, the "industrie" category and in AG zones.
- Chicken wire.
- Sheet metal.
- Recycled wood.
- Snow fencing.
- Non-architectural concrete.
The permit, and the agricultural-zone catch
A building permit is required for a fence and no work may start before it is issued. The Municipality publishes a dedicated form, updated March 2026.
The catch that misleads people: in an agricultural zone the permit fee is waived. The permit itself is still required. Fee waived does not mean permit not needed.
What we will not tell you, and why
- What the height is measured from. The by-law says only that dimensions are in SI units. No datum is given for fence height.
- A pool enclosure height. The Municipality sets none. Article 73 is the entire pool chapter and it gives precedence to the provincial regulation. Any enclosure figure attributed to L'Ange-Gardien is wrong.
- Heights for use classes P2 and P3, public utility and parks. The article 97 table does not apply to them, and the by-law's silence is not a permission.
