One leaning post never stays alone for long

A fence works like a chain. Every post holds the section on its left and the section on its right. When one post lets go, its two neighbours pick up the load it stopped carrying. Wind pushes on the line. Snow banks up against it. The lean travels from one section to the next.

Frost does the rest. A post that was not set deep enough lifts when the ground freezes, drops back in the spring, and its hole gets a little wider every year. Screws work loose. Rails split at the ends. The gate starts dragging on the ground.

Caught early, the job is often one post and one rail. Left through two more winters, it becomes a full section, sometimes the whole run. Have it looked at while the problem is still in one spot.

We repair fences put up by other contractors, by the previous owner, or by you. Pressure treated wood, cedar, PVC, chain link, aluminum.

Posts replaced and set below the frost line

The post is the first reason fences lean around here. We pull it, break out the old concrete, dig below the frost line and set a new one. Treated wood, galvanized steel for chain link, or aluminum, to match what you have. The old concrete leaves with us.

Sections straightened and realigned

When the material is still sound, we straighten instead of replacing. Sections brought back to plumb, the line re-strung, fasteners tightened or changed. You do not pay for new parts you did not need.

Boards, rails, panels and mesh

Split board, rail broken at the end, cracked PVC panel, privacy slat torn out, chain link gone slack or cut. We replace the piece that failed, not the whole fence.

Gates that no longer close

A gate that rubs, sticks in winter, sags or drags. Hinges and latch replaced, gate post reinforced, the opening reset. On a pool gate we also reset the self closing and self latching hardware.

Storm, snow and plow damage

A branch down on the line, a bank pushed into it by the blower, a section torn off by wind. We deal first with anything unsafe or anything leaving the yard open, then plan the permanent repair.

By-laws checked for your address

Fence by-laws differ between Quebec and Ontario, and between municipalities. We confirm the rules that apply to your address before we start. If the repair changes the height of the fence, that check happens before anything is ordered.

Three things drive the price

How many posts have to be redone, the material we have to match, and how many gates are involved. Access counts too. A post at the back of a closed yard, with no way in for equipment, takes longer than a post at the street.

We do not publish repair prices, because no two repairs are alike. Two posts in an open yard can cost less than one heavy gate. A range printed on a web page would tell you nothing useful about your fence.

The visit is free and so is the written quote. We measure, we probe the real condition of the posts and rails, and you get a firm itemized price. If repairing costs nearly as much as replacing the section, we say so and give you both prices. The call is yours, not ours.

Warranty and payment

What the quote says

5 year warranty on the installation

In writing. It covers the work we do: the posts, the alignment, the hardware and the workmanship, for 5 years. On a repair it applies to the sections we redid, not to the rest of an existing fence we never touched.

What the warranty excludes

Impact damage, exceptional storms, and changes made by someone else. You hear that before you sign, not in fine print at the bottom of a page.

Financing available

Do you repair a fence you did not install?

Yes, and we do it all the time. A fence put up by another contractor, by the previous owner, or by you one summer. No questions, no lecture. We check the posts, the rails and the hardware, and tell you what still holds and what does not.

Repair or replace, how do I decide?

It gets decided post by post, not from the sidewalk. We probe the base of the posts, because that is where wood goes first. If the posts are sound and the damage is on the surface, repair is almost always the right call. If several posts are soft at the base along the same run, replacing one post brings you back here next year. In that case you get both prices, repair and section replacement, and you choose.

Can you match the repair to the rest of my fence?

Often yes, but let us be straight about colour. New wood is lighter than wood that has greyed in the sun for years. It closes the gap after a season or two, faster if you stain it. White PVC matches well. Coloured PVC less so, depending on age and manufacturer. Black chain link and black aluminum almost always match. We show you the difference to expect during the visit, instead of letting you find it afterward.

Does a repair need a permit?

Does my neighbour have to pay for half the fence in Ontario?

That is between you and your neighbour, and we stay out of it. What we can do is make the conversation easy: we quote the whole job in writing, itemised, so you both see the same number instead of arguing over an estimate. If you want, we split the quote into the portion along the shared line and the portion that is only yours. If the two of you cannot agree, the City of Ottawa and the province have a process for boundary fences, and that is the right place to ask rather than a fence contractor.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Ottawa?

A repair that puts the fence back the way it was does not change what was already there. Building something taller, longer or in a new location is a different question, and the answer depends on your property and your zoning. We check what applies at your address with the City of Ottawa before we dig, and we tell you before you commit to anything.

How to fix a damaged fence?

A split board or a loose hinge is a reasonable weekend job. A post is not. The ground here freezes and thaws roughly 90 times a year, about 40 of those in spring alone, and that movement is what lifts and leans posts. A post reset too shallow comes back up the first winter.
