Custom gates in Gatineau and Ottawa

Single, double and vehicle access gates. Heavy hardware, an oversized hinge post, and clearance set for winter ground movement.

Why the gate goes first

The gate is the only part of your fence that moves

A fence stands still. A gate does not. It swings open and shut every day from spring to fall, and every swing pulls on one post. Add ground that lifts when it freezes, and wood that swells in spring, and you get the gate that closed cleanly in October and drags in April.

The cause is almost always the same. The hinge post was set at the same size and the same depth as every other post in the line. It should not be. It carries the whole weight of the gate off one side, and it carries that weight in motion, not standing still.

What fixes it for good is a short list. A bigger hinge post, anchored below the frost line. A frame that is braced or welded, depending on the material. Adjustable hardware, so the gate can be brought back into line in spring without taking anything apart.

What you get

Built for the opening you have, not for a standard size

Single gate

The walk through between the front yard and the back. We measure the real opening on site, so the mower, the wheelbarrow and the green bin go through without scraping.

Double gate

Two leaves for a wide opening: lawn tractor, trailer, a delivery of materials. A drop rod holds the standing leaf, and a fixed stop takes the swing.

Vehicle access

Driveway or work access. Swing or slide, depending on the room you have and the slope. Aluminum or steel frame, with a support wheel when the span calls for one.

The same material as your fence

Pressure treated wood or cedar, PVC, galvanized or black chain link, ornamental aluminum, composite. The gate matches the line you already have, even if someone else installed it.

Oversized hinge post, heavy hardware

Adjustable hinges, spring latch or key latch, gate stop and strike. The hinge post is bigger than the line posts, and it is anchored below the frost line.

Winter movement allowed for

The ground here lifts and settles through every freeze and thaw. We set the gap under the gate and the swing clearance for that movement, so the gate keeps closing through the seasons.

Pool gate hardware

When the gate is part of a pool enclosure, we build it with self closing hinges and a self latching catch, with the latch mounted on the inside face and no footholds on the gate itself.

By-laws confirmed first

Fence by-laws differ between Quebec and Ontario, and between municipalities. We confirm the rules that apply to your address before we start.

Gate only replacement

If the fence still holds and the gate is finished, we replace the gate and its post. There is no reason to redo the whole line.

What it costs

The price gets measured on site, not guessed on the phone

A gate price comes down to the width of the opening, the material, the number of leaves and the hardware you pick. A single wood gate and a double aluminum gate across a driveway are not the same job. The ground matters too. A slope changes the clearance under the gate, and rocky soil changes the work of anchoring the hinge post.

That is why we do not give a range over the phone. We come and measure. We look at the slope, the condition of the existing posts and the direction of swing. Then you get a firm written price that lists materials, hardware and labour. The visit and the quote are free, and there is no commitment.

Warranty and financing

What is covered, and what is not

5 year warranty on the installation

In writing, in the quote. It covers the posts, the alignment, the hardware and the workmanship for 5 years. On a gate that is exactly the part that counts, because that is the part that works.

What is excluded

Impact damage, exceptional storms, and changes made by a third party. That is stated up front in the quote, not buried in small print at the bottom of a page.

Financing available

A driveway gate is a project that lasts decades. You do not have to pay for it all at once. Ask us about the terms during the visit, before you decide anything.

Local team, in business since 2018

We work both sides of the river, in English and in French, from the first visit to the last gate adjustment. Winner of the Consumer Choice Award 2026 for the Gatineau region.

Common questions

Gates, in plain terms

My gate drags on the ground in the spring. Does the whole fence have to come out?
Usually not. In most cases the hinge post moved with the frost, or the gate frame racked out of square. We look at the post first. If the post is still sound, we square the gate and reset the hardware. If it lifts every winter because it was never anchored deep enough, the post has to be redone, otherwise the same thing happens again next spring. We tell you which of the two it is during the visit.
How wide should a double gate or a vehicle gate be?
It depends on what has to go through. For a walk through with a wheelbarrow or a green bin, a single gate is enough. For a lawn tractor, a trailer or a delivery of materials, you want a double. For a driveway, we measure the opening between the posts and account for the turning radius and the slope. Bring the width of your trailer or vehicle to the visit and we work out the clear opening with you.
Can you replace just the gate and leave the fence alone?
Yes, and it is a good part of what we do. It does not matter who built the fence. We build the gate for the opening you have and match it to the material already in place. If the hinge post is the real cause, we replace it at the same time, because a new gate on a post that moves gives you the same problem in two years.
Do I need a permit for a gate?
Fence by-laws differ between Quebec and Ontario, and between municipalities. We confirm the rules that apply to your address before we start. That check is part of the free visit, and it happens before any material is ordered.
